TRAINING
DSA have a team of NRA Certified Club Instructors who have all attended and passed the two-day CI’s course at Bisley. Shooters going through our SSS and follow-on programs can be assured of the best possible guidance when attending training with us. The most important quality we look for in any members is a good and safe attitude to firearms handling and use, and this training is aimed at developing and building on existing or new core skills. There is a wealth of experience and knowledge within the Association, and we find we all learn and develop together.
All new members are required to attend training as part of their probation, whether they are existing Firearm Certificate (FAC) holders or new to shooting. This helps to ensure all shooters are on the same page with how shooting disciplines are run on the DSA ranges. Those existing shooters with other qualifications, skills and experience can be catered for by agreement and at the discretion of the DSA Range Management Team, but the DSA as a policy do follow the Home Office three-month probation rule. The full SSS program is available on our Downloads Page, but we will cover it briefly below.
The SSS training sessions are held on Saturday mornings and the first one will cover an Induction Presentation all about how the DSA site, ranges and facilities work. We cover the basic do’s and don’ts of safe firearm handling and range practice. The session continues with a Range Shooting detail where after instruction we assess how your basic firearm handling, loading, unloading and firing are developing. All being well at this session we will look for a qualifying group which if successfully completed will see your Safe Shooter Assessment (SSA) signed off.
Existing FAC holder can then attend the range on ordinary shooting days as well as SSS Training days with their own firearms, and non-FAC holders can pre-book DSA firearms and ammunition to use on the day to also attend normal range days to help make up their six shooting attendances.
New members attending SSS sessions will have a variety of DSA firearms to work with from .17HMR, up to .308. You will also be instructed in firing rifles with both Scoped and Iron Sights. Firearm hire is £10 per firearm and ammunition is at cost for each of the calibres available.
